It was so lovely to sit down with Catherine Williams and hear her inspiring journey through Zumba® and Z Club NY. She says finding Z Club NY has taught her that she is stronger than she thought she was. She says , “I love the workout, the energy, the music, and the dance. You will see me in class on the Upper West Side at least 3 times every week.” … – by Yali Szulanski for Z Club NY.
How has taking classes with Z Club NY benefited your life?
I love to dance. When I was younger I was a ballet dancer and the love of dance has never left me. I am also very into fitness and I work hard to keep myself active and in shape. So for me, Zumba is a win-win. I get to put my dancing shoes on and I get an amazing workout. The Z Club community is a terrific group of students and instructors, there is always a very positive vibe in class. It’s a chance to lose yourself in music and dance, forget the stress of daily life, and have fun.
What inspires you to succeed in class and in your life?
I always gravitate to a challenge. Zumba® is a completely different style of dance for me, the opposite of ballet. I love learning new steps and challenging myself to let go and loosen up a bit. The only competition in class is with myself, but I continue to push myself to really learn the steps and allow my body to move in new ways. Every class is a new challenge and every instructor has a different style. There is always something new to learn and always time to improve. But in the end it’s all about having fun and getting in shape.
How has Zumba/ZClubNY supported your health and fitness goals?
It’s true that I am a bit of a gym rat but I have become so bored with the machines and classes at my gym. I cannot spend 1/2 an hour on the elliptical! Plus an hour on a machine at the gym isn’t giving me the exercise I need. Zumba® is a full body fitness experience. You move your body in different planes, you move your arms, your legs, your core…Zumba® is total fitness. It is a high energy cardio workout that burns tons of calories whether you are working in a high impact or even a low impact zone. Absolutely anyone can do Zumba®, no dance experience needed. For me, Zumba® is the best cardio workout I can get.
What have you learned about yourself through taking classes at Z Club NY?
I have learned that I am stronger than I think. And I think that goes for all of us. My Zumba® instructors always push me to do more, but when you’re having fun you are you are more likely to challenge yourself.
How did you come across Z Club NY and Zumba in general? What is your favorite part about Z Club NY?
I first learned about Z Club NY when I moved back to NYC and was trying to locate Irena Meletiou. I took her classes a few years ago at the Reebok Club and I never forgot how amazing she was. After some googling, I found that she was teaching through Z Club NY and I signed up for the 2 class package to give it a test run. I have been hooked from the very first class. I love the workout, the energy, the music, and the dance. You will see me in class on the Upper West Side at least 3 times every week.
Which classes/Instructors are your favorite? Why?
I have never had a bad experience with Z Club NY and truly ALL of the instructors are excellent. My favorite teachers are LaShawn Jones, Jamie Forward, Jamie Drye, Irena Meletiou, Chris Vo, and Edmee! These guys teach in my neighborhood so I take their classes regularly. But I have taken a class with most every Z Club NY instructor and trust me, there are no weak links. When I return to California for work, I really miss Z Club NY classes. Nothing compares!
