Hardly anyone encapsulates the energy of Zumba and Z Club NY better than Cherie Goon, with whom I had the pleasure of speaking and interviewing about her journey through Zumba, health, and finding that true happiness in her fitness routine. Cherie shares her story with Z Club NY with a huge smile on her face! – by Yali Szulanski for Z Club NY.
How has taking classes with Z Club NY benefited your life?
I can thank my sister Gina for introducing me to Zumba in general. My doctor had told me that my cholesterol was slightly high, and if I didn’t want to be on medication I would have to exercise more. I didn’t belong to a gym, so I went looking online for Zumba classes and luckily stumbled onto Z Club NY’s website. So glad I did! Taking Z Club NY classes has become an integral part of my life. I love that each class is different yet challenging, and all the instructors are amazing. My fitness level has improved, and, more importantly, I’ve made great, long lasting friends like you, Yali!
What inspires you to succeed in class and in your life?
Well, in terms of my life, definitely my family. They are my world, and I want to be around on this earth with them for as long as I can. Succeeding in class plays a pivotal role. As I get older, I realize how important taking care of myself is. I know that working out hard in class would only benefit me both physically and emotionally. With a Z Club NY class, it’s great to have one hour to dance hard and to have fun!
How has Zumba / Z Club NY supported your health and fitness goals?
I can say that all of the Z Club NY classes that I have taken have been very challenging cardio-wise. My body went into shock with my first class, which was with the amazing Irena Meletiou. Talk about trial by fire! Once my breathing came back to normal, I was hooked. I love the feeling I have after each class, like I have accomplished something significant. Since starting Zumba, I am happy to report that my cholesterol went down 26 points, and has stayed down since!
What have you learned about yourself through taking classes at Z Club NY?
I think the biggest thing I’ve learned is that I really enjoy dancing! I tend to be a control freak in life, and I just love letting go and going with the flow in class. When I feel stressed, I dance it out!
Which classes/instructors are your favorite? Why?
All the instructors are so talented and energetic!
Irena Meletiou – her picture should be next to every dictionary’s definition of the word “fierce”. Her classes are always high energy and filled with fun and awesome choreography. There’s a reason why her classes are always packed. She is truly a wonder to watch. Her passion for dance is very evident.
Christopher Vo – such a sweet and friendly soul. His dancing is amazing, and his smile can light up the Northeast! He brings such warmth when he teaches. You can’t help but smile every time you dance in his class. He had my heart when we did a One Direction song in class.
Xavier Marzan – That man can DANCE! He is so much fun to watch in class. Great dancer, fun choreography, everything you can ask for in a Zumba instructor.
Jamie Forward – Oh, sweet, sweet Jamie! She is the energizer bunny in human form. Her classes are super high energy, and her choreography is super funky. I smile all through class because it is so much fun. I come out sweating like I’ve run a marathon. You are guaranteed a great time when you take her class.
Irina Peschan – I LOVE THIS WOMAN! Her Afro Fusion burn class is a must to take for me. The choreography is intense and challenging, probably the most challenging I’ve ever encountered. She is a wonderful teacher, and is so patient and kind with everyone. There is such joy that I feel when I dance in her class. She is truly love and light incarnate.
What is something unique about yourself that you’d like to share?
I work in a diamond-grading laboratory, so I have the honor of looking at beautiful diamonds all day. I know, poor me!
