The Aqua Zumba® program offers a fresh spin on aqua fitness by incorporating the spicy moves and red-hot music from the Zumba® Fitness party into invigorating water-based workouts.

Our very own Eduardo Fajardo is, among his multiple talents, one of the select few Aqua Zumba instructors in New York City. We asked him to give us an overview of Aqua Zumba and its benefits. As Eduardo puts it very well: JUMP IN!

Q: When did you become interested in Zumba Fitness?

EF: It was in 2002, while working for Bally Total Fitness, that an opportunity to attend the first Zumba instructor training class was offered to me by my fitness director. My dance and fitness background were the key factors that qualified me to be chosen to participate in this training.

Q: What attracted you to teach Aqua Zumba?

EF: It was during the annual Zumba Instructors convention in 2009 when the program was introduced by the Zumba office. I registered for the program without really knowing what to expect. I had been a fitness instructor for almost 12 years and had always had an interest in the aquatics fitness world, but had never had the opportunity to attend any training or classes. So I thought this would be the perfect way to experience it for the first time; well after that the rest was history! I fell in love with the program and went on to also obtain a national certification with the AEA (Aquatic Exercise Association) in order to learn more about the aquatics world.

Q: Who can/should take an Aqua class?

EF: Participants who enjoy aquatic/water workouts including healthy men and women, older adults, de-conditioned individuals, and also people with joint problems, arthritis, obesity issues, etc.

Q: Can you tell us what the benefits of Aqua Zumba are?

EF: In general, here are some key benefits of aqua based programs:

  • Water-based aerobics improve muscle tone, stimulate weight loss, strengthen the cardiovascular system, enhance respiratory function, and can even boost cognitive function.
  • Participants who have minor injuries, are overweight, pregnant, or suffering from arthritis and many other chronic ailments may all benefit from a water-based fitness program.
  • Buoyancy protects those with weakened joints and other physical conditions by cushioning impact and dissolving tension.
  • Because water provides superior resistance, aqua classes are also ideal for fitness-oriented participants who want to take it to the next level and improve endurance. (Note: professional athletes often train in the water.)

Since Aqua Zumba classes provide an irresistible party atmosphere, they attract the younger generation, as well as active older adults. No matter what the age or fitness level, Aqua Zumba classes benefit everyone.
